Clifford Township: Two Hundred Years (Book) by Sally Fischbeck and Patricia Peltz
The significance of its subject matter goes beyond the township borders. It is a glimpse
into the daily successes and hardships of rural America since the early 1800s. With over
600 pictures, maps and diagrams packed into it 245 pages, readers may witness the evolution
of commerce and farming through the experiences of Clifford residents. See a typical Main
Street with its store fronts, dirt roads and horse-drawn buggies survive flood, fires and
economic hard-times. Because the book is organized by the original 12 school districts,
no corner of the township is ignored. We see the scenes, activities and faces from the
distant and not so distant past. Pictures show folks at work and play, at school and church;
they touch us with their humanity. Co-author Sally Fischbeck states, "The joy of saving
pictorial and oral history of our area continued to motivate me and Pat Peltz during our two
year effort to collect the information and the six months it took us to write the book.
We're proud that this is available for the bicentennial celebration and pleased that this
effort was instrumental in the formation of our township's new historical society."
Local Authors Receive Honorable Mention Award
On Thursday, November 20, 2008, local authors Sally Fischbeck and Patricia Peltz were
presented an Honorable Mention Award from the PA Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations
(PFMHO) for their co-authored book Clifford Township: Two Hundred Years. Janet MacGregor,
assistant director of the PFMHO made the presentation at 7 p.m. at the Clifford Fire Hall on
Rt. 106. In attendance were Historical Society board members, community members, and friends
of the authors.
Congratulations to Sally Fischbeck, Patricia Peltz and the dedicated volunteers who
collaborated on this project!
"Clifford Township: 200 Years" (DVD)
A two hour presentation of our township history starts with expert historians,
S. Robert Powell and Ed McMullen, sharing their knowledge of the first one hundred years,
including the early development of Elkdale and Dundaff. Thirty local folks add wit and wisdom
as they reminisce about early life in Clifford Township - one room schools, birthdays, farm
chores, pet skunks and more. Their stories are informative and entertaining. The forming the Clifford Volunteer Fire
Department, cutting ice on Crystal Lake, logging around Lake Idlewild, providing food and
entertainment in a self sufficient environment are all explained from first hand experiences.
We hope you will enjoy having this special DVD in your video library. DVD $20.

"Our Forest - A Story of Transition"
District Forester, Jim Kessler explains the changes in our area forests from virgin timber
stands to tomorrow's deer selected species. Learn how our early settlers were affected
by the forests and how our present day forests reflect their influences. The DVD provides
a one hour mini-course in forestry. DVD $15.

 |
"Geology - Diversity Unearthed"
Geologists Jon Inners and Michael Slenker explain the conditions over millions of
years that resulted in the formation of our area. The reason for Elk Mountain's
existence, evidence of local rock being formed below the equator, the forces resulting
in quartz at Stillwater Cliffs, the significance of the Pottsville conglomerate,
the presence of coal and blue stone in our township, make for a fascinating hour
of viewing. Stone enhanced the lives of our early settlers in many ways
and our present day local economy is also positively affected by the forces of nature
that happened so long ago. DVD $15.
